Artist statement :

Gabrielle Bejani is a French and Lebanese artist currently living in London.

As an Arab feminist woman groping for her path, Gabrielle Bejani transcribes her ever-ending experience of self-actualisation into her art practice. Her artworks are an investigation into the numerous anguish that the world bequests us. She very consciously chose to look at these challenges with unwavering softness.

Through a soft colour palette and the weightlessness of her artworks, she evokes traditional feminine characteristics such as fragility and empathy. She aims to celebrate these belittled values and uncover their powerful linkage with dignity. Gabrielle believes there is pride to be found in vulnerability, even though it's conventionally associated with weakness; she thinks there is powerful grace in being honest with one own wonky truth.

She addresses her artworks to her comrades, to all the people who have been pushed to drape themselves in vanquishing glares. She wants to tell them, You are worthy of love.

Additionally, Gabrielle is fascinated by the opaque nature of the self. The "me" seems so evidently accessible yet is full of mirages. She feels that as soon as one tries to figure oneself out, the stories that maintain one's sense of self suddenly become wonky and blurred.

To capture her impression of that obscure layered inner world, Gabrielle Bejani makes collages where she experiments with Transparent and see through materials. These materials allow her to play with the possibilities of concealing, veiling, and revealing. The effects communicate ideas, such as secrecy, shame, and/or simultaneousness, but also convey the sentiment of a hunch, a vague feeling which seems clear yet remain partially hidden. Like a word condemn to remain at the tip of the tongue.
